A familiar is a creature that players know and trust. Familiarity breeds comfort, and players often rely on familiar creatures to help them in their campaigns. A familiar can be a pet, a friend, or even an enemy. In D&D 5e, familiars are now called “familiarites.” Familiarites are creatures that have been specifically chosen by the DM as part of a campaign or adventure. They are usually intelligent and loyal, but they can also be dangerous if not watched carefully. Familiars come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have one common goal: to help their master in whatever way possible. They might be able to do this through communication or action; sometimes they just need someone to hold their hand while they walk the dog.
