If you’re like most breastfeeding mothers, you’ll want to pump your breast milk while you’re driving. Here’s how to do it:
- Park in a well-lit area. You don’t want to be pumping in the dark or in a car with limited visibility.
- Get out of the car and close the door behind you.
- Put on your pumping bra and pants and adjust them as needed. Make sure your shirt is tucked in so that your breasts are covered completely.
- Find a comfortable spot on the ground or a nearby bench and sit down with your back against the car or wall, depending on where you are pumping. If possible, try to find a spot where someone can help watch your baby if he or she starts fussing or crying while you’re pumping (this is especially important if you’re using a breast pump with an attached baby bottle).
- Start by taking a few deep breaths and letting them out slowly through your nose while counting to 10 (or some other calming mantra). Then start pumping by pressing down on one breast with one hand and using the other hand to twist the pump handle clockwise (or counterclockwise, depending on which side of the pump is closer to your nipple). Pump for about two minutes, stopping every few minutes to take another deep breath and count to 10 again before starting again. Pump for at least eight hours per day; more if needed but avoid overpumping, which can cause milk ducts to become blocked ..
