- Sweep and mop. This is probably the most basic step, and it will help remove any dirt, dust, or debris that has accumulated over time. Make sure to sweep in all directions and be sure to get under furniture and other objects.
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment. If your basement is relatively small, using a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment may be the best option. Simply attach the hose to the vacuum cleaner and turn it on to full power. Be sure to move furniture out of the way so that the vacuum cleaner can reach all areas of the floor.
- Use buckets and sponges. If your basement is larger or if there are obstacles such as walls or furniture that make it difficult for the vacuum cleaner to reach everything, buckets and sponges may be necessary tools. Fill one bucket with water and add enough soap to cover the bottom of the bucket (about 1 cup). Place one sponge in each hand and wet them thoroughly before using them to scrub surfaces clean. - Use bleach solution diluted with water as needed..
