If you have a small engine or a motorcycle, you may not need to remove your fuel tank to clean it. There are several ways to clean a fuel tank without removing it. The first way is to use a garden hose. Fill the hose with water and turn on the water until it is spraying out of the nozzle. Hold the end of the hose close to the top of the fuel tank and spray the water onto the top of the tank. Try not to get any water into the engine or exhaust system. The second way is to use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment. Put on rubber gloves and connect the vacuum cleaner hose to an open port on the bottom of the fuel tank. Turn on the vacuum cleaner and wait until it has pulled all of the dirt and debris from around the fuel pump, then turn off the vacuum cleaner and disconnectthe hose. Pour a little gasoline into each carburetor bowl and light each match until it starts smoking, then turn off both carburetors by pressing down on their float bowls with a screwdriver. Pour out any gasoline that has collected in each bowl by opening each carburetor vent valve slowly while holding your hand over each one so that any gas that escapes will fall back into its bowl (this is called priming). Disconnectthe vacuum cleaner hose fromthe fuel pump. The third way is to use an air compressor with a special attachment called an air scrubber . Fill up an empty spray bottle with gasoline or kerosene, attachthe air compressor’s scrubber attachment, turn onthe compressor, wait until it has reached full speed (about 120 mph), then hold your hand over one end ofthe spray bottle while turningonthe other end ofthe spray bottle so that allofthe gas escapes throughthespray nozzle atthe same time(this iscalled mixing).
