If you’re like most people, you probably don’t know how to change a car battery without losing settings. But if you do, it’s a good idea to do it in the order in which they are listed on the battery’s owner’s manual: starting with the negative side. To change a car battery without losing settings:

  1. Open the door of your car and remove the battery cover.
  2. Disconnect the negative cable from your car battery by pulling it out of the connector at one end and then pulling it out of the other end.
  3. Place your hand on top of the positive cable and twist it around so that it becomes tight against the connector at one end. Now hold onto one end of this twisted cable and pull until it comes free from the connector. You should now have a new, uncharged car battery in your hands!
